Introduce Yourself Here

Hey Julia!

The good vibes in your comments over on the webcomic site always brighten my day, so it’s great to see you here.

Very cool to hear about all your interests. Gosh, I haven’t thought about Fruits Basket in years. I didn’t even know there was a reboot. Thank you for the heads up. I’ll take a look.

Also glad to hear my 2012 SEO was on point. Thank you for letting me know how you found me.

I look forward to the great energy you’ll bring to this new space.

Welcome!

Hi, I’m Liz. I came across Artifice many moons ago, and have been following Alex’s work ever since [even if I tend to lurk most of the time].

I’m from the UK, and I sing in this band. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yujRnqzMlq8
[Shamless self promotion - you can also find us here on Facebook: www.facebook.com/the.whiskey.rebellion.music]

I once wrote a song about TYP which Alex was kind enough to link on the comic.

To actually earn a living, I work in retail. In my [very little] spare time, I enjoy reading, writing, drawing, painting, cooking, amateur photography, and watching cheesy superhero movies. I have recently begun writing for a local online music magazine. I also run and cycle - to say that I enjoy these pursuits would be an exaggeration; I just want to be able to stuff my face more frequently.

I live with my beautiful partner, and we have no pets or children, or plans to acquire either. My partner is the other vocalist in our band, and he is probably the most talented musician who I have ever had the pleasure to personally encounter. I’ve not witnessed an instrument that he has been unable to play. He is also incredibly intelligent, and has a superbly cynical, terrifically twisted sense of humour.

What else? I am currently learning to drive. I can touch my nose with my tongue. I once got hit by a double-decker bus by crossing the road whilst reading a book. [Guards Guards by Terry Pratchett. The novel is highly recommended. The obliviousness is not so advisable]. Surprisingly, I have never broken any bone.

I’m 31, and have many acquaintances and few friends, which is probably attributable to antisocialness, or apathy. I’m confident and enjoy talking to people, but I typically prefer to spend time alone. My hair has been blue [at least partially] for the past 5 years. I am perpetually sleep-deprived. I hate potatoes.

Hi Liz!

Welcome! Gosh, that was a fun video. We have such a talented group of readers! And it’s awesome that you and your partner share music-making (and intelligence!) together.

And double-gosh, it sounds like you have a lot on your plate, but it’s all so much cool stuff! I hope you’re enjoying the new gig with the online music magazine. That seems like it would have good symbiosis with your band.

Good to see you here! Now that you’ve come out of lurk mode, I hope to hear from you more!

Gary here. Been reading comics since I was a wee tot. I’m not sure exactly when I became so enamoured with DC’s Legion of Super-Heroes, but I continue to love those characters tremendously.

I ran across Alex through some gay comic groups on Facebook and have been a devotee of The Youn Protectors ever since. Love seeing these characters continue to grow.

Welcome, Gary!

Great to see you here, and so glad you found my comics through FB!

Here’s a fun fact: in addition to working on The Teen Titans, before he started on The Young Protectors, do you know what the other big DC comic Adam DeKraker worked on was? Legion of Super-Heroes!

So maybe you finding us was meant to be.

Hello everyone!
I have been a long time reader of Alex’s comics! I started reading in about the middle of Artifice! I used to be an avid commenter and camper, but now my work schedule has kind bogged me down and I am usually in bed before the page updates!
I do love this community though. The Young Protector’s community has been my favorite online community for a long time. Everyone is always so respectful to each other, and I love that!
You’re all rock stars, and I am so glad to be a part of this community! I am hoping this new community forum will help me get active again in the community! I miss chatting with you all!

Wow, 10 years of Latin and Greek! That is very impressive. I studied Latin for two years in grad school and enjoyed it. Never got fluent enough to read ruins, but I liked how it expanded my knowledge and appreciation of English. Good luck on the dual studies!

Hi All!

My name is Adam. I was born in Vermont, went to school in Pennsylvania (then Kansas) for medieval literature, and have lived in Minneapolis for the past 10 years. I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes on Halloween when I was six years old - irony, before I knew what irony was - and have had it for a shade over thirty years now. By day, I work in Trade Compliance for a large company in the area. By night, I can usually be found singing in a few local choirs or writing about whisky. I run a scotch club in the area and use it as my main foray into social media. Oh, and I am also a huge fan of film scores. I read a lot and would like to get back into the creative writing I did in grad school.

Several years ago an acquaintance referenced a XKCD, my first exposure to webcomics. Eventually, I checked out a few of the links there and stumbled upon Questionable Content (oddly enough, the first page I read of that had characters talking about scotch - it was a sign! :joy: ). After several months reading that, I noticed an ad for TYP that caught my eye…I believe it was at the start of chapter 2, so I didn’t have too much backstory to catch up on. Then went back and read Artiface. Been hooked since then.

I’m a Patron because I have a lot of friends and people I respect who are artists of various kinds and believe good art should be supported, because boy do we ever need it. And even though I may pay my bills by working for some giant faceless corporation, I recognize and push the value of the arts and their creators every chance I get. I love TYP and Artifice because they are phenomenal stories and characters no matter who loves who. The fact that they serve a continually underrepresented segment of humanity is icing on the cake for me. We need more of this. While I wish I had a chance to camp and engage in the awesome banter/thoughtful discussions that happen within this community, real life sadly intrudes a lot. Working on it, though! I do like this site interface so far, though, so maybe this’ll spur me to engage a bit more.

Hope to see you all around!

Hi, I’m Jules Jones, and I’m one of the older members of the community, although I can still get away with calling myself middle-aged. I first found Alex’s comics through a Project Wonderful ad for Artifice on another of my favourite comics, Questionable Content.

Alex is responsible for me having a (now late and much lamented) Project Wonderful account, acquired because it amused me to spend some advertising dollars for my m/m romance novels on ad slots on Alex’s site, thus supporting a queer comic while taking a tax deduction for my own writing. He is also responsible for me having a Kickstarter account (thank you, Alex, that site has sucked a lot of discretionary spend over the years since), and a Patreon account. Yes, I like giving Alex money to make sure the comic continues.

I’m cishet myself, but I also get representation in the comic in the form of a team leader who is not dressed as if she’s stepped out of the pages of a soft porn mag, and a villain who is dressed that way whilst looking as if she’s older than me, and being allowed to look good while doing it.

At the time of posting I’ve had health problems for a while that limit my participation in the comments, but it’s a community that is the opposite of “don’t read the comments”.

Thanks Adam!

I really loved my Ancient languages but it seems it shouldn’t be. I’ll still keep all my books and dictionaries, maybe once I finished the new studies and have a stable job I might get back to it as a hobby

I learned to appreciate languages, too, while studying the Ancient ones. Especially the complexities of grammar ^^

@jreed3842: Welcome! So cool that you’ve been with me since Artifice! I agree that we’ve formed a truly special community, and you are definitely a special part of that. I hope you’re able to participate more again too—you’ve been missed!

@Adam_Irving: Welcome, fellow Vermonter! Very cool to learn more about you here. A scotch club sounds fascinating.

Also interesting that you found The Young Protectors through QC. Those ads definitely helped me build a good chunk of audience. Thank you very much for your kind words, and your Patreon support. Hopefully this site will spur you to participate more (and I’m glad you like the interface here)—it’s great hearing from you!

@JulesJones: Another fan brought in through QC! Those were definitely my most successful Project Wonderful (R.I.P) ads. I’m glad that I was able to introduce you to so many cool resources, and I very much appreciate your continued support, and your continued good presence in the community.

Also glad to hear you like my choices with both Commander and The Platinum Priestess. As you’ve probably heard me mention, I sometimes question my choice about The Platinum Priestess’s outfit. But you definitely get the reason why I made that choice, and it’s good to hear that it works for you.

I hope that things with your health improve very soon. I always look forward to hearing from you.

And yes, I know from other creators that not all webcomic comment sections are like ours. Y’all have definitely formed a community that is the opposite of “don’t read the comments.” I find the comments from y’all inspirational and motivating. And I think they add a lot to the reader experience as well.

Welcome, Jules!

Do I have a request to introduce myself here? To what extent? I am an older gent in the state of Pa that is medically retired and a man of many hobbies that appreciates art and comics in many forms. As in the mariner I am a man of many talents and a master of none. Will that do?

It does just fine, William. Welcome to the forum here! It’s great to have you!

I am Doki. I am soon to be 36, and live in the Southeast/Appalachian Highlands. I am used to she/her pronouns, but I am trying to get used to using they/them. I have mental and physical health issues.

I think I found Artiface while it was still in the process of updating but 1) I didn’t have discuss at the time 2) I was still new to how webcomics work 3) I lost the comic when my brother’s laptop broke because I was using his computer because mine died. I came upon Engaging the Enemy during Chapter 2, I think page 47 or 49, and I have been reading the comic ever since.

I have read many webcomics and fanfics. I read mostly Stargate Atlantis (McShep), Harry Potter (there are few people I don’t ship Harry with), and Hikaru no Go (a fairly quiet fandom now as HnG is an old anime) fics. I read some Yuri on Ice, Hawaii 5-O, Marvel, Voltron, Sherlock, and other assorted fics. If you want a comic to read, ask, I have plenty to recommend.

Welcome, Doki! Hope you enjoy the community here. It sounds like you have a lot of comics experience (and fanfics!). What was the first comic you remember reading? I think mine was some Conan the Barbarian comics my father had from the 1970s.

I honestly have no idea what the first comic I read was. Though I remember Starfighter was the first webcomic I commented on using Disqus.

Hey Doki!

You’ve been a very special part of our community for a very long time. I’m very glad to see you here! I think you add a lot to all the discussions.

And you were actually someone I immediately thought of when I read about the benefits of the forum’s Trust System rewarding good community members.
