I remembered a comment made in one of the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy books about “banging the rocks together” …
It’s a throwaway line in both the novel, the radio show, and the various dramatizations: at the beginning of the newscast where the reader finds out about Zaphod Beeblebrox becoming president of the Galaxy, kidnapping himself, and stealing the spaceship and all the other wildly insane and silly details of his election, Douglas Adams took a swipe at the Universe:
The newscast begins: “…and we’ll be saying a big hello to all intelligent life forms everywhere … and to everyone else out there, the secret is to bang the rocks together, guys…"
It beggars the question of how some uncivilized savage creature could be listening to the broadcast but that isn’t the important part. This is one of those amazing insights into how civilization began even with creatures with 15 pair of arms who invented the aerosol underarm deodorant before the wheel.

Just stumbled upon this observation, but what a classic reference! Would be really fun if either had made a reference to Hitchhiker’s, but I guess one of them wouldn’t have been aware of it (as a resident of hell) and the other maybe hasn’t finished catching up from his time spent underworld…
