Black Stories Matter

On this page, our readers suggested stories in the comments that featured black heroes, and I’m taking a moment to try to highlight one with each of our updates. Long-time reader Kate G suggested a prose YA novel called Mare’s War that shares some often overlooked history involving the African American Battalion in World War 2.

4.6 stars on Amazon, with lots of rave reviews. Here’s what Kate has to say about it:

a great young adult book… written by Tanita S. Davis that has won the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Literary Work. It’s recounts Mare as a rebellious teen in the South during the 1940s, who ran away and lied about her age so she could join the African American Battalion in the Women’s Army Corps (WAC).

The African American Battalion (aka the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion) in the WAC was a real battalion that existed in WWII. It was the only all-black, all-female unity in the Army that served overseas in WWII. They handled the mail that went overseas to the soldiers. (My mom trained in the same position as these women, decades later.)

That’s not history I knew about, and it sounds really intriguing. And since it came out in 2011, I bet it’s another one you could probably download for free with a library card and Libby.

Definitely check it out. And if you know of another story with a black hero or heroes that you think should be getting more attention, please give it a shout out in the comments below! I want to share a lot more of these!

So!

So! Spooky and Flyboy are flying together again! But this time they’re on the attack! Is Flyboy’s eyesight really that good? Will Spooky really be able to take out the bad guys before they get Ambrosia? And if not, how will they be able to free her from those chains in time?

Tune in this Saturday to find out! Hope to see you there! :grinning:
